1527 · Schleitheim · Swiss Brethren

What happened

On 5 January 1527 Zurich drowned Felix Manz in the Limmat — the first Anabaptist executed by Protestants. In February the Swiss Brethren agreed the Schleitheim Confession (Michael Sattler, executed that May): believers’ baptism, church discipline, the Lord’s Supper, separation from the world, pastors, nonviolence, no oaths — the core of Swiss Mennonite and Amish practice.
