What happened
Jakob Ammann (born 1644 at Erlenbach; lived at Oberhofen on Lake Thun; in Alsace from about 1680) pressed for shunning, twice-yearly communion and foot washing, and broke with the Emmental elder Hans Reist. The church divided into the Amish and the Swiss Brethren/Mennonites. The Hochstetler father signed petitions beside Ammann in 1701–02.
