Life and evidence

( Joseph Goldsmith, 1796–1876, and his descendants, quoting the Mennonite Encyclopedia)

“The great grandmother of J. S. Gerig, Smithville, Ohio, was Mrs. Christian Gerig, née Elizabeth Goldschmidt, of Markirch, and therefore the Ohio Gerig families are descendants of the Markirch Goldschmidts.” The Goldschmidts were a Swiss Mennonite family: several brothers came from Richterswil (Canton Zurich) to Markirch (Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines), Alsace, in the early 1700s. Markirch is where Jacob Hochstetler (c.1666–c.1722) lived with Jakob Ammann.
A genealogist’s chart of the Markirch Goldschmidts (Jules Rebert-Goldschmidt, 1930s) is in the Mennonite Church Archives at Goshen.
