Life and evidence
Earliest name in Staker’s chain.
Unverified chain
Staker’s early Ramseyer generations are uncited and contain contradictions. They are kept as leads; verify against the Signau (before 1648) and Eggiwil registers now downloaded to the archive.
2002 Family Record (p. IX–X)
The Family Record gives the same line: Peter (b. 1535, Signau; wife Christina) → Ludwig (b. 1568) → Hans (b. 1594) → Ullrich (b. 1640) → Christian (b. 1672). It adds: Christina was present at a baptism at Lauperswil; the family’s children were baptized as infants (so not yet Anabaptist); Hans bought a farm in 1629; Ullrich was a saddler “who moved several times during his marriage”. The book credits Adolph Ramseyer, a Swiss police officer who researched Ramseyers, so it and Staker probably rest on the same unpublished research: they agree but are not independent confirmation.
In their lifetime
- 1536 — 1536 Menno Simons joins the Anabaptists
- 1549 — 1549 Menno Simons visits the Prussian congregations
- 1571 — 1571 Last Anabaptist execution in Bern
Research tasks
- Verify in the Eggiwil/Signau parish registers (see Bern parish registers) task/ai
Searched 2026-10-31
Lauperswil, the parish of the hamlet Ramsei, has the oldest register in the area (from 1528), but baptisms for late 1531 to mid-1537 are missing, exactly his birth years. His marriage was not seen in Lauperswil marriages 1557–71. He is likely the earliest Ramseyer any parish record can reach.
Earlier bearers of the name (not proven ancestors)
Johans and Chünrat von Ramseia, burghers of Burgdorf, 1343–1361; Rudi Ramseis, 1369. About 190 undocumented years separate them from Peter. See Fontes Rerum Bernensium - Ramsei mentions (1343-1369).
